I live in Hillsborough Twp., Central NJ and currently use Verizon
Wireless. Verizon provides good coverage in most areas in NJ and NYC
where I use my phone. T-Mobile recently opened a retail store in my
neighborhood and I was considering them because they cost less. Would
some one comment on the coverage and quality of T-Mobile service in NJ
and NYC?

Thanks.

Ed,
You can do a google search on the newsgroups and also check
www.howardforums.com.

I have both Verizon and T-Mobile. In the NYC/NJ area, Verizon is just
slightly better in terms of coverage. I rarely hit a dead spot with Verizon
while T-Mobile has a few. Voice quality on T-Mobile is noticeably better
than Verizon. With T-Mobile there is a difference with the phones you select
in terms of RF performance.

I'd check the T-Mobile site so you can take a look at the coverage and
decide if it works for you. Then, you can go for the 14 day trial (30 days
if you buy through Amazon) and try it where you travel. Coverage looks
pretty weak in NW and South NJ.

Personally, the regional 3000 minutes for $50 plan is the best deal going
since the coverage is very good.

I also have both phones, which I use pretty exclusively inside NYC. Not
sure about NJ, but I find that Verizon is much much better in terms of
reception (except in mid-town Manhattan, where they are both good). You can
get Verizon reception inside many buildings...not so with T-Mobile.

I agree that, once you get reception...the voice quality on T-Mobile is
noticibly better. People often don't know that I am talking on a mobile
phone, which is never the case with Verizon.

Forgot to add. THe phone you have plays a big issue in reception. Some of
the Flip phones suck no matter what.. I also get great reception in NYC on
T-mobile, minus a couple areas I go. My friend get's no recption on her flip
phone while I get great reception on mine, this happens alot in Malls ect. I
can call out of the mall but she can't.

I had to change from verizon, it was a hudge headache, and the fact you roam
in Bricktown (home area) pee'd me off. In This area T-mobile is the primary
carrier, and reception is A+.

Depends on yoru phoen also. I get great reception in Ocean Monmouth County.
Travel north it is Great, Travel to NYC it is great. My friends phoen same
service (her flipphone) can't call from malls, stores, or in many areas.

I had verizon, they sucked. I roamed in Brick NJ my home town. It dropepd in
and out alot on the parkway.

THe only networks detected well here are ATT and T-Mobile.

My personal experience: Verizon has better reception in the city, T-mobile
has some penetration issue in big buildings. T-mobile is quite good in
Queens, but spotty in Brooklyn.

My experience using T-Mobile has been okay in Monmouth and Middlesex
counties. Some weak signals around route 35/36 and in Holmdel/Middletown
areas, could be because it's AT&T's area...:)
Good signals in Edison/Brunswicks. I get none or very very weak signal in
buildings.

Ed,
I live in Somerville. TM is great. The only time I have trouble,
locally, is in buildings with metal ceilings, like Mannion's Pub. Then
again, talking on a phone at a bar is downright rude. Go outside if
you must talk. Reception in my own store is great, five bars at almost
all times. I had ATTWS cdma and could not rx 10 feet inside my store.
I have the Samsung e105 which has proven to take a bit of abuse. It
has better rx than the Sony-Ericson units, in my opinion. It is not
compatible with palm pilots if you are looking to surf the web.

You're right....I live between 35 and 36 in Middletown. Coverage is spotty
at best. Generally, I'm pretty happy though.
